"Tortilla": A Performance into the Essence of Corn, Presented by Estephania González

Interdisciplinary artist Estephania González proudly presents her upcoming performance, "Tortilla", scheduled for October 27th, 7 PM, at the Waterloo Center for the Arts. This event is a key highlight of the Vertigo Performance Art Fall series, in association with the University of Northern Iowa School of Art.

“In Tortilla, I take audiences on a journey through corn's history, highlighting its ties to Latin traditions and Iowa's Latinx communities. We'll explore corn's transformation from kernel to tortilla and its central role in our shared stories. Inspired by ancient tales and the Aztec Corn Goddess, Chicomecoatl, this performance is part of a larger project about agriculture's impact on immigrant lives, leading to a four-part short film. I'm eager to share the beginnings of this story with everyone,” said González about the performance.

Estephania extends her heartfelt gratitude for this esteemed invitation, recognizing the Vertigo Performance Art series for profoundly shaping her early passion for performance art during her academic pursuits.

This artistic venture epitomizes collaboration, with Art Farm Iowa, a new rural arts venue in Northwood, Iowa, assuming a pivotal role. Art Farm Iowa farmers have devotedly cultivated the corn that will soon metamorphose into the tortillas integral to the performance.
